North Shore and North Side Area

North Shore and North Side

The North Shore and North Side areas actually encompass 20 different neighborhoods and cover the land north of the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers from the rivers’ edges, across the flat inner neighborhoods, and up-and-over the hillsides extending north from the city. These neighborhoods have seen many changes as an independent municipality full of green spaces, stately homes and modest frame homes annexed to the city in 1907 undergoing waves of renewal and gradual development since the 1970’s.

Housing types and styles are wildly variable here and now include well-preserved Victorian mansions and row houses, new riverfront apartment complexes with their own marinas and gym facilities, single-family homes from the late 1800’s through new construction in the most recent re-imagining of the area. Residents here can cross one of three main pedestrian-friendly bridges over the Allegheny River and arrive downtown in ten minutes, or can utilize the buses or “T” system to reach their destinations. Most residents drive to the near northern suburbs, 2-3 miles away for serious shopping trips, or take public transit over the river to the Strip District or the eastern neighborhoods where stores are plentiful. For sports, art, interactive learning and musical and theater performance spaces, these neighborhoods offer many options, including:
Heinz Field, home of the Steelers
PNC Park, where the Pirates play
Rivers Casino
Children’s Museum
Mattress Factory gallery (contemporary art)
Carnegie Science Center
Andy Warhol Museum
New Hazlett Theater
Stage AE (performance stage)
and the National Aviary

You will also find:
Numerous long-established restaurants sprinkled throughout the area and the newer, national chain restaurants near the sports facilities, two breweries and one whisky distillery, two large public parks, the main campus of the Community College of Allegheny County, and Allegheny General Hospital-a well-respected hospital system
The recent addition of a flat, well-lit walking and biking trail along the banks of both rivers has created a wonderful option for exercise, sight-seeing and socializing in all seasons
Highly-variable home values, ranging from a median of $196,000 in some neighborhoods to $55,000 in others. Many homes in the most desirable areas of the North Side sell for $325,000-750,000. Less desirable areas are much more affordable, although less proximal to the sports facilities, cultural attractions, and shopping areas.
